As the summer days roll in, our outdoor spaces become the heart of our homes where we spend our time making memories and soaking up the warm weather.

Designing an outdoor space looks different for everyone depending on its main purpose. As you settle into your brand new Beenyup home, we’ve explored some key points to think about when the time comes to creating your perfect outdoor living space.

Main purpose

Are you the ultimate entertainer, known for hosting dinner parties or a great BBQ? Or perhaps you envision your space as a serene haven for unwinding with your family, or perhaps a kid-friendly sanctuary? Having an idea in mind of how you want to use the space is a good way to begin with creating a new outdoor oasis. This doesn’t just have to focus on the backyard, if you enjoy sipping on your morning coffee with a different view, consider setting up a cosy chair out the front. It’s all about maximising the potential of your outdoors.

Layout

If you think you will make greater use of your outdoor dining space than your indoor during the warmer months of the year, think about placing your outdoor dining table close to the kitchen – it’s not only practical, but creates a smooth transition that will feel like an extra room or extension to your living space. Or, if you’re not concerned by kitchen proximity, consider where the sun hits the most throughout the day. Do you want your table in an area that gets the most sun or prefer an area that provides more shade and protection from the harsh Western Australian afternoon summer sun? Consider the types of trees you can plant to support your vision – for shade, as an edible garden and not forgetting the two and four legged kids of the household!

Introduce a focal point

Creating a feature or focal point is a good place to begin your idea and then design the rest of the outdoor area around it. Depending on the size of your space, this could be a water feature, fire pit, a jaw-dropping piece of furniture, or even the outdoor dining table itself.

These focal points often become the heart of your space, so make sure it reflects the mood and function you are hoping for.
