Spring has finally sprung, and that means picnic season is finally here. Set within the relaxed rural landscape on the edge of nature, Beenyup Grove’s Harvest Green Park is a great place to relax, celebrate the outdoors and share some tasty food with friends.
Planning the perfect picnic doesn’t have to break the bank or take loads of effort, which is why we’ve compiled a list of all the tips and tricks to make it even easier for you.
Pick Your Spot
Harvest Green Park has state-of-the-art play equipment and ample open space for children of all ages to burn off energy. There’s plenty of grass areas too, but we’d suggest setting up under a tree to make sure you can make the most of the shade in case it gets too hot.
Pick The Perfect Blanket
Choose a blanket that will provide enough cushioning, but that’s also machine-washable in case of grass stains (or food spills!). To really elevate your picnic experience, we suggest bringing along a pillow or two to create some comfort and cushy seating options.
Pack Right
Wicker baskets are charming, but not always the most practical option. Try using an insulated tote or bag with compartments and straps to secure your contents, plus padding to cushion soft food or glasses. Enamel plates are light, easy to pack and carry, and they won’t go soggy and collapse like paper plates. They also look and feel cooler than plastic and are way better for the environment than disposable dishes.
Travel Light
The point of a picnic is to eat on the ground, so a full-on table kind of defeats the purpose. Keep your picnic swag as concisely curated as possible. When you find the perfect spot, all you’ll need is a blanket and your portable feast. You do, however, need somewhere flat to rest your plates and food. We recommend packing a board or too just in case!
Pack Your Food Properly
One of the most important stages of your picnic prep is ensuring that your food is packed properly so that it won’t spoil or get squashed. If food needs to be kept cool but you want to cut down on bulk and weight, put some small water bottles in the freezer a few hours before leaving and they can double as chiller blocks and drinks when you arrive. Heat food as close to departure as possible and then cover it in aluminium foil and wrap in a tea towel with a microwaveable heat pack. Another great tip is to pack your salads, sides, and condiments in lidded Mason jars for a country-style serving option that won’t spill and is easily transportable.
